WHAT IF PROTECTING NATURE ISN'T BAD FOR BUSINESS?

What if it’s the only good business left?

It’s Good Business: Moving Beyond Conservation is an award-winning short documentary about a radical idea that is rapidly becoming conventional wisdom: Our economies don’t exist apart from nature. They depend on it. And more than thirty years ago, Mexico began proving what happens when a country understands.

A FILM WHOSE MOMENT HAS ARRIVED

In the 1990s, destroying forests was often treated as an unavoidable price of economic development.

Mexican ecologist José Sarukhán refused to accept the choice.

The alternative?

His alternative was CONABIO: Mexico’s National Commission for the Knowledge and Use of Biodiversity - an unprecedented institution built to put knowledge about nature directly into the decisions of government, communities and industry.

It asked a deceptively simple question:

What if protecting biodiversity was part of how business growth worked?

It’s Good Business tells the remarkable story of the people who pulled off one of the biggest mind-shifts in history.

And what happened next.

BEFORE “NATURE-POSITIVE,” THERE WAS CONABIO

Today, governments, investors and corporations around the world are grappling with a realization that sits at the heart of this film:

Nature is not an externality. It is infrastructure.

Food systems depend on it.
Supply chains depend on it.
Economies depend on it.
Human life depends on it.

Terms such as nature-positive, natural capital, biodiversity risk and nature-related financial disclosure are rapidly entering boardrooms and government policy.

But decades before this conversation reached the mainstream, Mexico was already running an extraordinary real-world experiment.

CONABIO brought scientists, policymakers, and the public together to build one of the world's most remarkable national systems for understanding biodiversity, and made that knowledge useful.

This was science actually influencing what a country does.

"CONABIO has been a bridge between academia, government and society – to solve the problems that have to do with conservation."

  – José Sarukhán
